Over the years I've made three loco boilers. Don't be daunted yes you will learn new skills. Make sure your burners have more heat than you need you can't turn up a burner that's going flat out but you can reduce the heat from a big one. The other thing is cleanliness if the copper is clean and...

    Experimental Flash Steam and others

It's the same as you Americans call a flathead, valves in the block. Another one to add to the English to American translation list 😁

    Tentative first Four stroke

Robin, seems like we have followed a similar path in model engineering, several locos, stationary engines and hot air engines under my belt before embarking on petrol engines my first was a Whippet but even these can be bought from China quite cheaply now. I agree with a bar stock engine as a...

    Round Column Mill

I don't chime in often as most things have already been said. I've had a Warco Minor mill since '98, the best mod which made it a gem to use was a digital readout. Anyway back to my point when locking the head, it came with a special spanner of a particular length to stop you over tightening the...

    Not One but Two Myfords

I'm afraid my workshop is too small now, yes lots going on with IC engines, unfortunately have to work on my 5" Shay in the garage now, as there's no room for it it on its trolley, there's no way I could lift it on my own and no bench space.

    Not One but Two Myfords

Thanks for the kind remarks Green Twin. I have been lurking here for a while, having just built my second Tiny IC. I've been machining now for over 49 yrs having 3 steam locos, many IC engines and various pumps etc under my belt. I make things to learn how they work and how to machine parts...

    My Little Donkey

Hi I've made many donkey pumps some are on my YouTube videos including the lbsc pump from shop shed and road. Quite fiddly to make and really for a 21/2 inch guage loco, yes it does work. Another twin cylinder freely available on the internet is a van brocklin design fitted to my 5" Shay loco. I...

Almost burned my shop down and didn't even know it

The most important thing with electricity is if you can't see it treat it with great respect respect. Same as gases etc.

    Kiwi Mk II

I had an old set of car points which I cannibalised, and an old modelec coil purchased years ago. On my Mastiff I've used a magnet and hall sensor with a Minimag setup which is extremely good.

    Kiwi Mk II

I built mine from Hemingway's castings and followed the words and music from Westbury's original articles, it turned out to be an easy starter and good runner. It's a lovely engine to build enjoy.

A Really, Really Good Book on Engine Building

How about this for inspiration Brian. https://www.camdenmin.co.uk/products/building-the-maltese-falcon-special-price?_pos=1&_sid=3605591e4&_ss=r It's big enough to really power something. I know what you mean when you need something to inspire and excite to get creative again. Brian

How can I find a good home for my father's steam engine

Hello Richard I live in Cardiff and a member of the Cardiff M E S mentioned. We would be more than willing to advise you. It looks to me like it's a 2 1/2 inch guage loco, is there a tender to go with it. Without certificates for a boiler test the value reduces, there would be many people on...
