A Life Well Spent, but not nearly over......

slaurenson, your Dad was a lucky man, and an interesting one as well. I'm about to turn 65, and I'm thinking about downsizing already. My son has no interest in my machines. I have a nephew that may be. If not, my intention is to sell them down to a mangeable number - my 9" Logan, my 6x26...

    Power Hacksaw

I had the same experience. Restored a Mont Wards power hacksaw to like-new, works perfectly. But it still doesn't cut near as well as my 4x6 Jet bandsaw. Sure looks good though!

What to do with finished projects?

Earlier this year I attended a "Steampunk Tech Fair" or something like that. Multiple venors selling really old equipment, tools, microscopes etc. Lots of cool stuff, and lots of guys like us. One of them had 3 model steam engines. Those steam engines attracted more attention than anything else...

Can anyone help me finish off this Compact 5 Conversion

An addendum to an older thread: The Digital Machinist article referenced above. applied to the Compact 5 PC, and would not apply to the Compact 5 CNC. Since the OP referenced a Mk1 model. I would assume his is the CNC variant. I am in the process of converting a Compact 5 CNC. I did quite a...

    Milling machine belt drive plans

That ball bearing is just fine for the application. The only upgrade might be a Timken brand, double-sealed. It's a very common size.

    Zinc casting

So, if you recycle existing ZAMAC casting scrap it should be in the correct alloy and not subject to disintegration?

    Atlas Shaper Direction of Rotation

Tim, you are lucky. My Atlas shaper was running backwards. The motor appeared original and was not reversible. I had to source a motor. I did find a very nice replacement it at works very well.

    Wood Bandsaw Conversion to Metal

I just converted an older Jet 14", which is the same saw sold by Griz, HF, delta and many others. I used a 30 rpm gearmotor I had laying around, which turned out to give 110 FPM - perfect for steel. it was practically a bolt-on. But I' am also looking for some upgrade blade guides. The stock...

Value of old Sears Craftman 12X48 Lathe?

Much depends on location. If you are in the rust belt, lathes are thick on the ground and prices are low. In most of Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Montana, Alaska etc not so much, and any bench lathe draws a premium. That said, the older round-head Atlas is the least desirable of the full-size...

    Logan 10x42 lathe - Indiana

Nice lathe, well tooled. Change gear machine, but the condition and tooling makes up for most of that. I'd say it's probably worth the asking price, but I'd try for $1000 or less.

Oxa 000 qctp fit my 6" craftsman?

Far as I know the 3048 is an Asian copy of the A2Z. I can't imagine why the minimum too height is different. But I'd email or call Chris Wood at LMS and ask him directly. Nice guy, and very sharp.
