    Aluminium grain?

my mostly uneducated question :o, does the direction of extrusion create a grain direction? If so does it affect machinability in any way? Ray M

    jumping topsy

I've lust finished and run the Duclos 'Topsy Turvey'. It is an excellent runner but wants to jump up when it fires. Any suggestions for a fix? The compression seems very high, is that a possible problem? Ray M

    ER-16 Collets and Chuck

I have the ER-16 R-8 mount on my knee mill. This size takes me from .375 down to smaller than a # 60, that covers a lot of my work on my little engines.(I've seen an R-16 collet for sale that is one Imperial size larger than 3/8") The ER-16 is easier to change collets than the R8 I go to for...

    machine maintenance

Once upon a time there was a machinist working the night shift. One night he inadvertantly drilled a small hole in a fairly new Bridgeport bed. He sized the hole to accept a flush mount press in spring/ball oiler hoping the boss would think it was part of the bed design and not notice. He...

    Aluminum Piston Material sources?

Thanks for the article Kenny. I need all the help I can get. My latest build was the VAL (#15&16 Model Engine Builder). Photo in issue #20. It has a 1.124 bore. I used 4032 and allowed .0015 clearance using the criteria atwww.eriperformace.com. The engine turns ~9k . I often build less...

    Aluminum Piston Material sources?

I am getting ready to make a piston (1"od). Could you suggest some lower expansion aluminum suitable for this low RPM hit and miss?

    Aluminum Piston Material sources?

4032 aluminum has a very low coefficient of expansion to allow for a closer fit to the cylinder wall. It seems to be readily available. If the need be I'll take a look at my records for vendor. Ray M

    Alcohol Burners

A bit off topic, but the 'fire eater' runs a lot better with a 50/50 methanol/alcohol mix. Ray M

Jerry Howell - passed away August 29

He would answer all questions to the best of his ability (which was vast) I was fortunate to discuss engines with him in person, landline and electronically. Dam it! Seems like this hobby is running out of the old timers. They are not really appreciated in ink during their time. Thanks Jerry...

    philip duclos plans

After looking at the 'topsey' drawings I'm wondering if anyone can think of a reason not to use 6061 verses HRS for the body from a practcal design standpoint. Looking frward to comments. Ray M

    Upshur Twin

I converted the ignition system to Roy Sholls' CDI and all my problems went away. Looks like my 6vbattery with 12 volt coil couldn fire fast enough to feed the twin ignition. Hope this helps someone to not spend lots of time trouble shooting on startup Ray M
