Band Saw - Harbor Freight or Grizzly?

Hi Jeff. I did a part by part comparison of both on their web sites and they appear to be made at the same factory, with identical parts. Just different paint. If its identical to the one shown on the web site, and you can pick it up in person, I would seriously consider buying from HF. If you...

Proper Method of Caring For Steam Engine

You could spray WD-40 into the intake several times and run it through with compressed air. Follow up by spraying in 'marine fogging oil' and running it through. Also spray the out side and wipe up the excess. The WD-40 will displace the moisture, and the Marine fogging oil will help to prevent...

    Happy Groundhog Day!!

I have a huge one living under my storage shed out back. Every time I see him destroying 'Honey's' garden I try to convince her that its time to put our UN-invited guest to good use. ;D http://www.ehow.com/how_2096917_cook-groundhog.html -MB

Who's going to make one then?

I don't care what you guys say. I'm selling everything I own, moving into a cardboard box, and investing it all in this company! I'll be laughing all the way to the bank! I'll be a billionaire, I tell you! A BILLIONAIRE! -MB

    spark plug location

On my Upshur the 'L' shaped passage is the same size as the spark plug's tap drill. If I look down the hole under the head the electrode end of the spark plug can't even be seen. No need to worry. -MB

    spark plug location

I built 5 single cylinder horizontal and vertical Upshur 4-stroke engines using both locations. Also the ends of the plugs are recessed quite a way inside the heads. I was concerned about all of these issues, but they didn't make any noticeable difference. A more important factor is to locate...

    New compound slide

John, I use paper towels to remove the bulk of the grease if it's not dried on too bad, and finish up with small pieces of paper towels dampened with some mineral spirits or turpentine. Its best to do this out side or in an open garage with plenty of ventilation. leave the saturated towels out...

    Gear Cutters

I have to agree. The gear looks great! Congratulations! Now, if you could make up a few pairs of 2 to 1 ratio, say, 36T & 18T, or 40T & 20T 48 & 32 pitch, send them to me and I'll be more than happy to evaluate them by hands on inspection, and in a real world installation and use. Of course...

    Gear Cutters

Brian, It means 135 teeth and up. You could make a gear 3 ft in diameter with the no.1 cutter. Rack is a flat bar of any length with teeth cut using the no.1 cutter. Look at the animation on the right side of the link below. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rack_and_pinion -MB

    Elmer's Fancy II

smfr, die cut threads can go off a bit on a small rods (like 1/8"). On a small bore engine (like most of Elmer's) the tolerances are very critical, if you want a great running engine that will run on very low pressure. Do all the machining operations and light polishing on your piston all in...
