    Centre drilling jig

The most stable method would be to make some sacrificial jaws for your machine vice & groove them inside horizontally to hold rod, Further you can machine a ledge on each inner edge to hold plate etc. I make mine from cast iron, aluminium or brass. cheers, Lennard

Ban on small engines in California

Hi all, Dont you know that calling a young girl a hobgoblin could have a negative psycho impact on her for the rest of her natural ? life. In future kindly refer to the young thing as bloody hobgoblin.....what happened to ' children should be seen & not heard'?, although I would love to...

First engine, even if it is only a wobbler.

Hi Paul, I know oscillating engines are considered 'simple' but they were once pretty serious stuff. Take a look at the Diesbar based in Dresden.....a twin John Penn engine driving a paddlewheeler in Dresden. This engine has twin 24 inch pots with an air pump between. Fascinating...

    Print reading question

Eugene said... It's not a good idea to try to second guess the engineer or designer. I believe it is; or how can things be improved? I don't think I've ever built an engine exactly to specs....depends on materials, my mood at the time & a host of other things.....unless of course you are...

Double Dynohub: 2 Sturmey Archer generators in one - to be steam driven

Hi Steamchick, A bicycle wheel may turn relatively slowly. but you are looking at a large perimeter driving a small gen wheel at quite a fast speed. Not sure a steam engine will drive the gen fast enough unless geared up considerably. [assuming I understand your plan correctly.] I have a couple...

    tube pump

Hi, Great little pumps to make & quite forgiving. Some tips....... ensure the liquid feed is above the pump entry [ helps to fill the tube again as the roller goes past.] They are sometimes not too good at self priming. Design your pump with a tube small enough in dia. that the engine can drive...

Looking for a old light bulb

Hi, incandescent bulbs are available in Australia. In the interest of saving the planet, our Govt. offered to change them to leds n/c. An offer which I unfortunately took up. Only a personal thing & many wont agree, but I find leds throw shadows & are rather harsh. In my workshop particularly I...
