    Piano wire gripper design

Thanks for your replies, sorry that I did not visit for a while. The wedge grips look interesting. How to accommodate it in a spinning chuck though.

    Piano wire gripper design

I had a better idea using flat plate for the gripper teeth and I came up with this

    Piano wire gripper design

Thank you for your interest. I think that it is a good idea, but it might be that the piano wire is too hard for the teeth to grip. I am thinking of 3 rollers that deform the wire and clamp it with some kind of spring loaded outer sleeve that can be retracted to allow release. I have looked all...

    Piano wire gripper design

I am making a machine for making piano bass strings. What I need is some ideas of how to make a chuck for gripping the centre core of piano wire to hold it under tension. A drill chuck would not be suitable.

    Narrow grooving

I am making a set of pistons 2.65" dia and need to cut ring grooves 0.85mm (0.334") wide and 3.8mm (0.150") for the top rings. What sort of tooling would you use? The material is aluminium. Lapping wrist pins

They are going to be case hardened but thanks for your interest. The cast iron lap seems to work well on an old pin. lost a couple of tenths in 5 minutes.

    Lapping wrist pins

They look posh, but I think I could get by with some bent metal and a hinge with some iron and lapping compound. That is an amazing catalogue by the way.

    Lapping wrist pins

I have to make my own pins. They are 9/16" x 2. 3/8 long which will be case hardened. Any ideas for lapping to the high finish required? I have some cast iron bar that I can use to make laps and some coarse carborundum but how will I get the fine finish?

Making sodium silicate with cat litter

Today I found that the cooled product is very thick - almost like honey or golden syrup. It seems too thick to use on sand.

Making sodium silicate with cat litter

I just made about 3 litres of Sodium Silicate. 1 kg of sodium hydroxide (€12.91 plus €8.00 shipping) From Amazon 1.5 kg Silica gel (cat litter) (€5.00) 2.5 litres of water. As soon as the sodium hydroxide was mixed with the water I added the silica gel in it's out of the bag state. When the...

Making sodium silicate with cat litter

The reason is that I am in France and the cost of shipping due to it being classed as liquid makes it uneconomical.

Making sodium silicate with cat litter

I want to make SS from cat litter and liquid drain lye. All the recipes seem to use the dry type. One recipe is thus: 320g lye 800ml water 480g cat litter How should I compensate for the liquid lye? It is for making cores when I do cast iron in greensand.
