Thanks Longboy. That looks like a suitable curriculum. However, it's more than 100 miles from my address. A local community college, Central Piedmont, has a similar curriculum. I've considered it but haven't investigated it for a number of reasons. Primary reason being that I do not want to take...

Thanks for the offer rata221. I'd appreciate any time you can spare. I have questions about questions I don't even know I have! Let me know of a time that's convenient for a visit. David

Google shows hard bound copies of Smith's book for sale on Amazon and EBay. Prices begin at around $35 including shipping.

Thanks Goldstar31. Compared to yours, my Machinery Handbook is a pup with a printing date of 1950. I will look for the Robert Smith book on the 'net'.

Thank you Hengeveld.Gerard. Google lists Keith Appleton as having a series of beginner videos on making steam engines. I just bookmarked video #1.

B, I have ordered the Greenly book. However, the only mention I can find of 'Keith Atherton' is a professional baseball player. Can you provide a link?

Thanks for the recommendations B. I will look into obtaining a copy of the Greenly book as well as check out Keith Atherton. I can certainly relate to your statement on patience. I have unfinished model airplanes that I began building decades ago. I have a Sherline lathe as well as a...

Swordmaker15 I watched two of the 'episodes' on Clickspring. Basic filing techniques and how to make spade bits. Don't understand why shaping the bit was left until after hardening the steel. Good and interesting info, nonetheless. Thanks

Thank you Swordmaker15. I expect I'll need a couple of weeks worth of rainy days to get around to all your recommendations. I will make an effort. I'm too curious not to do it.

Thank you John Duncker. Self taught seems to be my direction so far. Based on the replies to my introduction, it appears as if I will eventually be taught by the community. What a grand situation for me!
