    Cutting groove for O rings

I need to cut grooves for some O rings, all on the lathe, these are quite small, 1mm width and into Stainless Steel (303) and need to be a really good fit. (Going to be holding 150BAR of pressure) What tool would be best, grind down a HSS parting tool is about the only think I can think off so...

Jan Ridders Flame Eater with internal valve

Woo Hoo, it's done and working.... woohoo1 First engine I have ever finished and it's a runner, I think I can now call myself a Model Engine Builder. Another example of Jan Ridders Flame Eater with internal valve. I started this almost 18 months ago with the intention of building two, one...

    Any tips on machining Graphite?

Hi, I am just about to make the piston and valve for a flame eater and I am sat here looking at a lump of graphite thinking I have no idea how easy or hard this is going to be. I need to obviously make it a good fit in the bore and also need to tap a thread through the centre of both. So...

    Flame Eater not working

Hi, I have built Jan Ridders Flame eater with internal valve, I think my mistake was I have built the MK1 version (I did start making this some time back) anyway, I just can't get the thing to run. Everything is running freely and looks OK, only problem was getting the piston and the valve to...

    Anodising

Hi Simon, I can't remember what the name of the other dyes I have used is, but I have stuck with the Gateros dyes as they work very well. Also if you contact them they will supply in smaller quantities as I only ever make up 1 litre at a time and you can use them over and over again, the last...

    Wire bending jig

Anyone got any plans for a simple wire bending jig..? I need to bend some 2mm Stainless and would like to make a neat job of it so I thought of making a jig, at least it will get used for other projects. Can't seem to find any plans. Thanks Dave

Nice job... Couple of questions.... In the dye for 45mins, wow, I normally only leave it in there for 10 to 15mins.... and you rinsed it after it had been in the dye, I tried this once and it washed out ALL the dye. After the dye I chuck it in boiling water to seal in the dye, did you not do...

    Anodising

Hi Goldigger, sorry I have been off this forum for months and only just seen your post. Yes http://www.gaterosplating.co.uk is where I got my dyes from, but not used the kit, but I don't think you would have a problem with it, looks like a good way to start. Nice looking lights, with the finish...

    Anodising

Just seen this. Vic, I have seen this before and normally, well, when I have done it, left the part in the dye to long. I have managed to improve it a bit using some very light polish, like brasso. Does take a bit of the colour out (excess dye) but it does improve it. Dave

DaveRC Builds a Upshur Single Vertical engine

Hi, Glad you found it useful, but I am still not 100% it's going to work, I can't see why not though.... My building of this has come to a grinding halt. Other projects from some other interests have taken over so I have not go any further with this, no doubt I will get back to it at some...

    Anodising

Yes, some of this I do in the kitchen. The Caustic Soda is done in the sink, there are some fumes that come off this so you do have to be careful, but it's all done quick, jug gets half filled from the hot tap and I keep the tap running, chuck in some soda and then the part. Part is in there for...
