Vintage generator based on ceiling fan

Yep, your slip ring looks just like mine, I just used some black delrin because it was there. I threaded the inside and screwed it onto the shaft. Only problem is, to remove it I have to unsolder the wires. Steamchick - I say that I wanted to leave the technical electrical stuff at my old...

Vintage generator based on ceiling fan

Well, when I went down the ceiling fan route, I know that a Bruce Macbeth was already turning one successfully. Plus, I had several old fans at my disposal. By putting my own magnets in, if I found too much load, I could change out for smaller magnets. As a response to K2, I purposely keep as...

Vintage generator based on ceiling fan

I will consider the open look at some point. I ruined one shell and snapped a tool bit because my rotary table simply isn't rigid enough. This was just an experiment for me. I know it can be done, I've seen it before, operating. I'm a retired electrical engineer, and still a rather fresh model...

Vintage generator based on ceiling fan

The first image is what used to be the stator, what got fastened to the ceiling. There are only 2 windings. Selecting one or the other changes the speed. There are 4 wires, 2 for each winding. The wires are fed out through the hollow shaft. This becomes the rotor, what gets coupled to my...

Vintage generator based on ceiling fan

I am going down the same path using old ceiling fan motors. I'm still in the experimenting stage. I attached the fan stator, which is normally stationary in a fan application, to the crankshaft of my Bruce Macbeth, using a rubber coupler. The surrounding shell, which is usually the rotating part...

Question about putting VFD on a step pulley mill.

I have an older Bridgeport, 60's vintage, with the motor that specs at 1730rpm at 60hz only. I usually leave my belt at between the second or third belt speed and run the variable thru the VFD. I never run faster than 60hz on the motor. I usually run 1/2" or 3/4" tooling max and I don't take...

Engine Coolant and Storage After Shows

OK, turns out that Aquafina bottled water is RO water. No wonder I can't stand the taste! So that plus regular good old green anti-freeze is the coolant of choice, and I need to incorporate a drain tap on my engine cooling system for draining after a show. Thanks!

Engine Coolant and Storage After Shows

I finished a Bruce Macbeth engine about a year ago. I ran it at Cabin Fever this year. I used Water Wetter as an additive to distilled water for the coolant. I left the coolant in the engine afterwards, thinking that the Water Wetter would keep corrosion at bay. WRONG! This pasty white stuff...

    Snow tandem compound I.C. engine

I know Roy has them listed on his website, but since he's attempting to ramp down his business, I did some extra searching, as I'm gathering up parts for a Snow engine build myself. I'm ordering from Roy for comparison, but I found this -...
