    April's Project of the Month

Thank You very much naming my engine project of the month. This is an honer I didn't expect with so many wonderful projects being listed. I recently got the cart kit for it from Don Weinbrenner. I now have it machined and installed. My son might come tomorrow and help me post a video of...

    1/2 Scale Tom Thumb

Thanks Mike, I took some video of the engine running, but don't know how to post it. Have to wait till my son comes so he can help me. The files are big. I did make the box. Got the urge to try to do finger joints after admiring the joints on some Ford coils I was recapping. Built an indexing...

    1/2 Scale Tom Thumb

Thank you for the kind comments. When I started this project I was not sure I was up to it. It turned out ok and I'm pretty proud of it. My first engine was the Mills 1.3 diesel that was in the first issue of the Model Engine Builder Magazine. That turned out ok also. I'm now building a 54"...

    1/2 Scale Tom Thumb

Finished reassembling after painting a few days ago. Took about a year of off and on work. This is my second engine. First from castings. It runs very well, better than my full scale Tom Thumb. My biggest worry machining it was ruining a casting since no more are available at this time. Larry

    Machining connecting rods.

Hi John, Thanks. Nice looking AT6. I had one close to 50 yrs ago. Loved it but couldn't afford to fly it much. Sure rattled the countryside opened up with the prop in low pitch. Larry

    Machining connecting rods.

Daryl, Thanks for the response. I talked to Don a few days ago. I got a fuel tank and fan parts from him. He said he had some parts left. Didn't know if he would get more cast. Was having trouble finding a foundry. I mentioned the Amish Cattail foundry in PA. I sure hope he does. It's a great...

    Machining connecting rods.

Gbritnell, Thank you very much. I thought that would be the way to do it but wanted to check with someone with more experience. This is my first engine from castings. I just bought the Tom Thumb over the Internet and the seller didn't tell me it had a cracked and brazed up rod. Luckily I found a...

    Machining connecting rods.

I need to machine two connecting rods from brass/ bronze castings. One for 1/2 scale IHC Tom Thumb and one for a full scale Tom Thumb. Need some ideas on how to accurately slit the large end. I plan to drill tap size holes for the bolts first. Not sure if sawing through with a band saw and...

    Casting Layout Paint

Thanks for the replies. Perhaps I'm being overly cautious. Not having experience with castings I don't want too ruin a casting. Not sure if a replacement is available. I would like to have an overall layout before removing metal. I did face the bottom of the base and made a mounting plate like...

    Casting Layout Paint

Hi All. I have been lurking for a while and have just joined. I am starting my second ic engine, First from castings. A 1/2 scale IHC Tom Thumb. My first question of what I'm sure will be many, is what do you folks use for layout paint on rough castings. I'm thinking of using white latex. I have...
