    Surface plate maintenance/ care

First, make a rigid cover that has at least 12mm clearance over the working surface. 18-20mm timber or plywood is sufficient to protect the plate from "stuff" set on the cover (and it will be!). Second, the only items on the plate should be the work and appropriate tools. Otherwise it becomes...

    Shrink fit

Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide is the explosive substance. It's also used as a hardener for polyester resin; like Bondo and fiberglass repair kits. MEK is the solvent of choice in the aviation biz because it's slightly less volatile than acetone. It will wash the crud off the workpiece instead...

    Shrink fit

You can cool the liner in a mixture of dry ice and either acetone or MEK, about -100 degrees F., and measureable shrinkage. Wear gloves and use tongs. Should drop right in the hot sleeve.

    Useful items from the supermarket!

Parchment paper in the baking section. It's thicker than printer paper, tough, and oil-resistant. Great for clamping that finely finished piece in the mill vise. Bob

    jo-blocks or guage blocks

Unless you are doing a lot of setups with the blocks, they may sit for months between uses. For that, I use LPS-3, and clean before and after use with acetone or MEK and a dedicated chamois. If you are using them daily, a thorough wipe with a silicone "gun & reel"cloth after cleaning should...

How to identify "Grain" in aluminum

Grain is usually only a factor when bending. Tighter bends can be made across the grain without cracking, and must be considered when the bend radius is less than twice the thickness, depending on the material and its hardness. Books on presswork can provide specifics. Grain direction is the...
