I have about 2 tons of chestnut coal from the 60's when my grandfather put in oil.
I also live in N E PA coal country
it has sat outside and needs to by rewashed
I burnt some about 5 years ago in a small coal stove, burnt fine.
Is this good for blacksmiths?
just the connecting rods to go
had to pack my little machining shop up in a big Tupperware and put it away for Christmas.
Hope to finish this week.
Thanks for looking.

I have followed two of your other builds and may I say you do excellent work.
Well except for that one part you that messed up on the water pump, but that build turned out to be museum quality. I'll be tracking this one.

After that great welcome you guys gave me two months ago I wanted to post my start of the HMEM EZ. the hardest part of being a newbie is tooling. I had to save for a month to get the 4 jaw.
I hope to do a paint finish on the EZ with self etching primer, how fine of a finish do I need?
After a long wait my first lathe is here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and I already made some chips.
and here is what I did waiting for it
Now I have to pick a new project.
Light rust on the bed (procedure for removing)
Please excuse this newbie if this has been asked before
I see quite a bit of light rust on some ebay auctions.
Is this a problem to remove?
Here is how I might trying to remove it.
1) pencil eraser to start removing the bulk of it.
2) I would...
I have a chance to purchase a early 90's brass bed Sherline lathe.
So which do you think is better? and why?
Just talking about the machine not the tooling or options.
90's brass bed (presume very good condition) or brand new (both Sherline lathes)
Tin Thanks again I havealready downloaded some of your suggestions.
I also purchased three books
The Home Machinist's Handbook by Doug Briney
Metal Lathe for Home Machinists by Harold Hall
Mini-Lathe for Home Machinists by David Fenner
hope I made good choices
I have a lot of reading now...
Thanks Guys --- Food stuff
I am looking for books with the newbie machinist in mind not Sherline alone.
Thanks for the help I am off to look these books up.
I can't find a good used shwerline lathe, so I want to buy my first book on the subject to start some reading off the WWW.
What do you recommend? and Why?
