    Strange reamer designations

I have bought tooling in the past from factory closure auctions , some was standard sizes but often the tools had been made specifically for the company and to a non-standard size. Dan.

What Fillament, wall thickness and Fill Percentage for Patterns

Green twin , I agree entirely , I started casting at 9 years old by melting lead ( sawn off the next door neighbours waste pipe) in a tin can on the domestic coal fire when mum had gone out , and poured into plaster moulds to make toy soldiers. Wasn't very successful but I learned quite a bit...

PM Research 4% silver-tin alloy solder and flux.

Although it contains silver this is still soft solder and not silver solder/silver braze , it would not be recommended for boiler construction today. Depending on local boiler codes it could even fail inspection. Of course this only applies to steamers used in public and for your own use you can...

What Fillament, wall thickness and Fill Percentage for Patterns

Exactly the same principle for lost plastic v lost wax , if you only need a couple then lost plastic is ok I guess , but if you want dozens then make a silicone rubber mould and get wax replicas. The most complex parts can be produced in wax , it burns out cleaner too and is re-useable. All of...

    1950 South bend lathe restoration.

I have had a similar experience with my Boxford "A" , basically a Southbend built in the UK. I had to strip it completely so that I could move it to the workshop in a wheelbarrow. Cleaned , fettled and painted then rebuilt, A beautiful machine, I have owned many small lathes ...

    Hand cramping and arthritis

Richard, My first job after leaving school was with the National Coal Board , this was the government body that ran the British coal industry in the days when we had one. I was a laboratory technician helping or hoping to keep the 13 mines of the Warwickshire coalfield running safely and...

    Hand cramping and arthritis

Perhaps we should design a home flour mill , something like a hammer mill would be fairly easy but a motorised mortar and pestle would require more machining capacity than I possess . Just pipe dreaming , I doubt that changing my diet after all those years would do much but I am trying the...

    Hand cramping and arthritis

Thank you ! This could be one of the most useful posts yet , at 76 I also suffer badly from hand cramps and often have to give up work after an hour. As a type 2 diabetic I have found that eating even a small amount of chocolate also seems to cause cramps too , so I guess I will be trying the...

Hexagon heads size for British Association hex fasteners (screws, bolts)

I have several sizes of hex BA screws if you just need a small quantity , some with a size smaller head to give better appearance (as already said) Dan.

How I store waste oil for my burner.

Same problem with non-ferrous casting , steel tools will dissolve , even in aluminium. A fireclay wash applied to the tools will prevent this. I often wonder how many of the guys using tin cans or welded steel pipe as crucibles get by without a mishap. Dan.
