Distilled water is pure water, De-ionized water is hungry water. Nothing there but H2 O. And it's corrosive as you can't believe it! Ph can be 7 but it's ion hungry so any transferable ions are eaten up.

Permatex #1 and #2 and Aviation-Form-A-Gasket are shellac based and contain no silicone. None. They've been around since air was new and way before silicon. Pete

Most any model live steam seller will have the exact item. Especially the UK. That said, teflon tape rolled into a string or cord and then wound around the glass and pushed down into the packing gland works well. Pete

Tire marking paint sticks have always been my go-to for filling engraved markings. Rub in then rub off the extra with a paper towel backed by a wood block. No block and the fill will be rubbed out especially shallower markings.

For equal 'capacity' machines, take the thousands you would spend on a cheapie and rebuild the SB to new. Ground, fitted, etc.... And you'd have a machine that will last longer than any two of the cheapies. And be rebuildable to new again. Yeah, always go for the old iron and when the numbers...
