I saw mention of the name "Moriya" on the forum, so I thought it might be a good time to bring her story up to date. The 10" fan we named Moriya, originated in my workshop in the early 1970's - yes, some 50 years ago. Plans were subsequently published in Live Steam Magazine (Dec 1974-Feb 1975) from which, over the years, many many examples have been made in home shops all over the world. Those articles have been reprinted with permission in "Steam and Stirling Engines you can build"

The original Moriya still is doing quite well and is used now and then at one end of my workbench in hot weather. She has cooperated in many experiments including a flexure joint at the piston, a leather cup seal for the piston, a snifter valve and others. Her favorite mod was the graphite piston. This material was first suggested to me for Stirling engines long ago by one William Chaffee under whom I worked at his Model Builders Inc. in the Chicago area one summer. The graphite piston has proven to be far longer lasting than expected; Moriya has it to this day.

A few years ago, at the suggestion of fellow Moriya fan Lee Muegge (1941-2020), I made a larger version, the 15" Moriya Major, plans for which are available at Amazon. You can see a video of this guy on YouTube. The fan already has an offspring in the UK, which is featured in a much better YouTube video. Moriya Major has a number of improving features some of which can be seen in my YouTube videos of its construction details. One of its major features is the enclosed firebox and chimney which keeps the heat of the flame where it should be and directs the exhaust up and away from the cool section of the engine. This proved to be so effective, that I outfitted the original Moriya with a similar system.

Going beyond this, last year I made a completely updated 10" Moriya the Second which incorporates the improvements and refinements of its earlier siblings, all of which retain the now classic style of the original. Plans for Moriya II are also available in book form at Amazon.

just finished one great build I made mine a little flash Gorden like. thanks for your concept

Thanks, Bob, for your comment...it's always great to hear from a fellow Moriya "fan" ... especially a double one like you !

I also built a Moriya and few years ago. Great design and great runner.
I will look for the books on Amazon.

Another fan ! Glad to hear that you made a great runner !

The easiest way to find the books is to enter 'Moriya Major' in the Amazon search window and it will get you right to it. And down the page a bit you will also see the book on 'Moriya II', the updated version of the original Moriya.

hi tinker
all in the name of fun..have a look at the other creations

Moriya was my first Stirling. In fact, it was the fourth engine I built after starting the hobby. I had never heard of such an engine before and was suspicious it would even run. So, I built it, heated her up and off she went, first try…unbelievable. I have 12 Stirlings now, they all run. An absolutely fascinating engine. Thanks for taking the time and effort to show us how they work. And for giving us such a reliable standard engine.

I've attached a picture of my three Fans.

Jim,
I always like to scale things up. Did both sizes of your Moriya fans have the same ratios of swept volume displacer to power cylinder? The original Moriya ran first time and did not have any trouble turning the blades. It was the first Stirling engine that I made.

Mike...
In round numbers, the displacer to piston swept volume ratio of Moriya Major is 1.6, that of the original Moriya is 1.8, and Moriya II has a SVR of 1.7. Anywhere in this range makes for a good fan engine.

Since Moriya was the first Stirling you built and it ran on your first try, making a successful Moriya Major will be a 'breeze' for you !

Jim,
I bought your book to build the Moriya Major and it arrived today. It is on my bucket list of builds. I may even try to scale it up a little. Great book--I would highly recommend it to everyone.
Mike

Just ordered the book, have always had the desire to build something nice looking and practical so this one tops the list.
recently moved house and had to sell lathe and mill, time to buy new machines and start a new shop, this project will provide the motivation to get re-started

Moving shop to a new place is difficult , but it offers the opportunity to end up with something better. Best wishes.

Meantime, you may wish to check out the video by one Bob Cannon who made a very fine example of Moriya Major:

Mike, if and when you get to Moriya Major in your project bucket, I still have some leftover tube for the displacer shell, hot end, and power cylinder... would be happy to donate it toward another Moriya Major.

Jim,
Thanks for the offer of the material. I have a couple of projects ahead of it. Maybe some building right away could use it.

Hi Jim, I have the Book Moriya Major coming in two days. I had never heard of the Moriya before, but what a cool working build to have in the workshop. I would be interested in your material offer. I would also pony up some spare change if needed.

Thanks, Jerry

Would be glad to help out with whatever I have leftover Jerry. After you get the book and look it over, let me know.
Jim.
