My brother used to be a jet engine mechanic and once he took me for a tour of the repair shop.

The fasteners are tracked all the way through the supply chain and the life of every engine part is documented. I pulled out an unopened bag of what looked like 8mm SHCS. He told me that if he used just one of the bolts from the bag, he had to remove the rest of the bolts from the supply (e.g. dispose).

Thus is the price we pay for traceability.
