Was anyone on HMEM planning on attending the WMSTR this year? I will be driving out from the East coast and plan to be there for Friday and or Saturday. I'm looking forward to seeing their model engine display and would especially be interested in seeing any engines made by members of this group.

Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion. It is held in Rollag, MN every Labor day (WMSTR). It was cancelled last year because of Covid. They have a separate area for model engines.

I am hoping to be there unfortunately not showing just visiting.

Here is a short video of the train that gives rides.

GRAIG Hi look forward to some Pictures of this,
WELCOME TO WESTERN MINNESOTA STEAM THRESHERS REUNION
enjoy yourself
MIKE

I'm originally from Fergus which is about 40 minutes South, so that is where I will be staying.

It is a fantastic show. It was started by the steam people and you can get to see some of the old traction engines plowing and threshing. The hit n' miss engines are everywhere.

I have heard that they are featuring (full size) Otto engines this year and there are supposed to be examples being brought in from long distances. I haven't been there since 2005 and that was the year I started into this crazy hobby so I wasn't paying a lot of attention to the models. I'm going to try to get there this year because it's (only?) a 4 hour drive for me. There isn't anything closer to me that has any displays of models so it would be fun to see if there are really "real people" that do some of the same things I do.

I was able to get over to check it out, rooms of stationary engines sitting there running, from tiny to gigantic as well as lots of everything else. A few pics that show just a hint of what was there. Very cool. I think I’ll keep a kerzel hit n miss on my to do list.

It was a very good show. Lots of big stuff and lots of little stuff. I even got to meet and talk to Wayne Grenning about his models of the Otto-Langen engine. It rained the day before so there was no dust but it was mud everywhere - but that keeps the riff-raff away!

The first is a 3/4 scale model running on hydrogen and the second is a much smaller model with spark ignition that looked like the Lenaz drawings.

A very encouraging thing to see was that, whether it was the little stuff or the big stuff, a number of younger people are getting involved. The young lady driving that huge tractor had an equally huge smile on her face and there were kids a lot smaller than her having fun, too.

1/2 size- I measured an original engine, made the patterns and built the engine.
the 1/4 was built by Jon Gingrich by measuring the original engine at Coolspring.
the 1/10th engine was built by Armin Devries in Germany
Wayne Grenning built the 1/14 Otto-Langden in 1991.

So - - - - no drawings - - - ever.

Thanks

It may seem 'different' to be asking about drawings. Where I live quite precludes me having access as Mr Marvin had so that I could develop my own. Creating drawings from a picture or two is 'not easy'. I've created a few of my own gizmos so I'm quite aware of the work involved in getting something from concept to piece. Find myself wishing that drawings of some of these beautiful pieces were available - - - its an added dimension.
