I know this is an old thread, but Stew thanks for posting this. I found it after seeing mention of the ME article on another forum. I have been thinking about building a Stuart horizontal kit but baulking at the cost of the kit plus postage to the opposite end of the planet so this looks like a great substitute. I reckon I have all the material needed kicking around in the shed, so off we go!

Hi Hopper

Thanks for your interest in this little engine there has been quite a lot made, its an ideal beginners engine the material required doesn't cost a lot can be made with basic machinery and the design is robust enough to tolerate the odd mistake.

If you would like a set of my original drawings just send me a PM with your email address and I'll mail them to you, that goes for anyone else who would like the drawings.

Cheers
Stew

Hi All,
Started on this today, It will be a long build as this will be a fill in project while I am waiting on parts and supplies for my other jobs.
Had some brass in the right size for the cylinder in my scrap bin, I had some alloy bar stock there as well, but at 100mm dia it can stay there.
I have a piece of 25mm scrap plate that will make the valve body tomorrow, I also have a 40mm dia round alloy bar stock that is 29 mm long, should be able to make the cyl end caps.

Cheers
Andrew

Progress on our effort so far, with limited shed time. The lad's learning a lot. Thanks again for the drawings Stew.
The flywheel is from an old steam valve handwheel that was kicking around. And had a few scraps of brass just the right size so decided to dress her up a bit. Will paint the cylinder and most of the valve chest green eventually. Cylinder is steel in case he wants to build a boiler and run it on steam at some future point.
Just the twiddly bits to go now: valve gear, eccentric and stuffing boxes.

Thanks Stew. I'll keep you posted on progress. Down to the fiddly bits now so have slowed down a bit.
