Hi Turbodirect.

Spur gear cutting is not as tough as most of us thought. Started off by buying some Module 0.8 Gears and a KG Gear Master Cataloque from TokyuHands,Tokyo,Japan to monkey see monkey do.Same gear cataloque provide the dimensions and data.
TracyTools UK website provided Data on Gear Cutter
Number to use for the number of teeth on gear. Module 0.8 and Module 1.0 have 8 cutters for the range of gear tooth qty.Ivan Law's book on "Gears and Gear Cutting help. The rest is getting started with gear blank and tools and accessories etc. Bought gear cutters from CTCTools.

Gus is right on it. He convinced me to try making spur gears. I bought my cutters from CTCTools and they're great. Took me a bit of time, practice but I found that it's not difficult. Just keep your wits about because one slip up and you'll be my competition

I am leaving for china tomorrow - going to Shanghai, any good places you know of for shopping for electronics and machine tools by any chance?

Not familiar with Shanghai.
Try the nearby Wizi city and head for the hardware streets.Best to have a Chinese speaking friend to accompany you but he must be fluent in cutting tools
and accessory. Hwangyan is a small industrial city heavy on machining, 2 hours away. Was there 5 years a ago.

Electronic Cities.Will get tips from my local friends.


Indexing Heads,
Vertek ,Taiwan is a better deal. A bit more expensive but good. Try Vertek.com. Found an outlet in HongKong. But was a bit heavy lug back.
The Chinese Indexing Heads are messy. LMS and ArcEuro sell some good ones but a wee bitty expensive. So I plan to make my ouw using Harold Hall's Books. Plan to DIY cut worm and wheel and the Index Plates too.


Please avoid hitting the highways outside Shanghai. Can get very foggy and highways closed for hours. Was trapped for 4 fours.

Avoid eating the Hairy Crabs now in season---------Hepatitis A B C.
Your host will be very enthusiatic and that you should eat some. Plenty of
Roe but very little meat and tasteless.

Welcome from faraway little red dot Singapore.
Just like you ,I am almost alone if not for one HMEM local member.The next nearest HMEM members are located in Australia.Plan to visit them and talk engines.
When I show my completed engines to local friends,they always jump to one question------Am I doing this to make $$$$.

Some people just don't understand the pleasure derived from making something like model engines. I don't want to sit around and vegetate, life's too short for that, people must have some sort of hobby or interest to keep the joints moving and the mind alive.

I have recently moved my mother into aged care, there is a man there who has a passion for 8mm projectors, they are displayed all over the place. He surfs the net for them, often getting them off eBay from international sellers. That's what keeps his mind alive.

Hi Paul,
My neighbour upstairs is now suffering dementia five years after retirement
at 65. Was trying to get him to go fishing with me.
Next door neighbour is doing fine with his mountain biking.
My ex-repair supervisor is hale and hearty at 70 and been fishing with me for last 15 years. Ex-refrigeration contractor just came back after his prostrate cancer was cured. Week end fishing keeps me occupied for week ends only and engine building Monday to Friday. ''70'' young Gus is still very healthy and building engines,fishing and travelling.

Funny thing, I never kept a diary whilst working, but for the last few years, it's necessary to keep track of all the activities so they don't clash. I'm looking forward to having a day free so I can get some progress done on my latest engine.

back from china - received my gear cutting book by ivan law. 1/3rd of the way through it already, and can already see it was a good buy!!

ill be ordering my tools from ctctools shortly and will probably get some more machining in this holiday. at least complete the block and cylinders...

thanks Gus for the warning of the crabs, they were serving them ..... I stayed far away
one question - which dividing head should I use? I have a CNC 3 axis at the moment which is what I am using to make the engine with, I was thinking of a manual head, but surely since its CNC shouldn't I be going for an automated unit? Comments please?

Didn't recalled we had a competition.The winner with most 1/2 tooth spur gears.th_wav
Messed up 6 Mitre Gears to get it right my way or Japanese way. Ivan Law's
method helped me demolish 3 gears.

Best to go for manual D/Head for now though a CNC D/H will be good for getting the number of teeth right. Cut my gears with my DIY D/H.
Hairy Crabs
I trust your host was not offended.Some one at same table have one more 600Rmb crab. For same price I get a very big 1.5kg Mud Crab in Singapore cooked in Black Pepper Sauce with plenty of easy to dig out meat. The huge pincers are best. Please call me for Crab Dinner in Singapore.

Done my time working in Shanghai and Nanjing as I was the only non-ABC manager in Ingersoll-Rand USA who could speak fluent Chinese in 1986.
Shanghai in 1986 was a huge garbage dump and rivers very badly polluted.

no my host was not offended at all -- I see the pricing in shanghai is very high ... compared to Wuxi, or hunan or other outlying provinces...

thanks for the info - I have read half way through the book now, not interested in the other gears for now. Just want to get the spur gears made for the engine. I will play with other gears later on as necessary.

im looking at vertex D/H -- also Taiwanese company, seems to be good quality. let me know what you think of which D/H is a good buy or not?

re- the competition, I guarantee you I will win this .... hehehe
