Is this propane torch suitable for silver soldering a 3" diameter copper boiler? I am concerned about picture 4, it doesn't seem to mix propane with air here. Considering buying it used online. It's an "Airco Propane Torch"

Thanks, Eric

You may find that successfully silver brazing a small boiler can be a somewhat complex affair. Correctly identifying the best burner, or even one that is, as you write, "suitable", often interacts with other factors, such as the arrangement for entrapping heat with refractory material, the use of supplementary heat, and the alloys and technique used. The burner head in your picture is one that seems to be commonly used in weed burning, and in heat shrink applications. It might well be suitable for your purposes, but in the absence of information about heat output, flame size and shape, and so on it is hard to be sure. "Airco" doesn't narrow things down much. They make dozens of burner tips for many applications.

Yes, I am aware there is more to it than just the torch, but locating a suitable torch seems to be the first hard part. I can also get a "weed torch". Just trying to get a decent torch somewhat inexpensively while not wasting money. I know the run-of-the-mill plumbers soldering torch with its 1 lbs tank is not up to the job.

I am in Canada if that makes a difference.

Then there is this one. I guess I would need to add a regulator/hose.

I'm no expert when it comes to boiler making...... but, that torch looks like the same size as the one i have. i soldered up 19 boiler pipes in a 3.75 inch plate in one go with no problems at all. where as before i was using a Map Gas torch on the top and a propane torch coming up from under neath and they could just get enough heat into the copper just to solder up one pipe at a time.

i have seen people use a torch like that to heat the whole thing up, just to keep the heat in the copper. then use a Map Gas torch at the point where they want the weld. i have tryed this method to and it worked out fine.

no, its a bit different. can't enplane it as i haven't seen it for a few months.

i can post a pic of the set up in about 9 hours. if that will help..... i'm at work at the mo.

ruddy work!!!

running late at home, thought i would take the SD card from cam and up load it at work. seems there over paranoid "someone is attacking me" software has disable the SD slot on our laptops. so that's USB mem stick, SD, CD rom burning all out the window. if they do any more crap like this, it will be back to pen and paper and just use the laptop for telling the time.

i'll be back home in 10 hours. ill do it than...... sorry about that.
