I came home tonight to double check the centre height and someone had deleted the bloody post...grrr

well the guy had been here for a while but never posted . then all of a sudden with no communication had a ton of stuff for sale . the posts were deleted as spam.

There could be many reasons for not posting some may be very personal. I feel that many members have lost out due to post being removed. I did not post for more than 18 months but retained my passion for this forum.

You did the right thingThm:. This forum is not eBay. Members here who actually look for and use tools know where to find them and this forum is not intended to be a PRIMARY source for them.

The for sale area is for active forum members . ie those who post and participate. the rules are clearly written.

Out of nowhere someone who never posted places 8 ads for multiple Items for sale. these 8 adds were deleted by 3 staff members.

Canadian horsepower you know the rules . behave show respect.
shouting at staff in public is not proper behavior.
for that you can have another 7 day vacation.

The only point I was trying to make, other than being interested in what he had for sale, was that there are surely a lot of people who don't want to post a build for example, but are quite happy to follow others threads and learn in the process. If they do want to clear a workshop out, then is it a big deal? Surely posting tools for sale here is only helping other members out?

I'm all for banning ebay style sellers posting crappy links to the newest this or that, but I for one would be very interested in some of the older stuff for sale, and the fact is that the people who are most likely to get rid of the older stuff we'd all be interested in, are also the least likely to actually participate in engine building forums.

the rules are clear.

There are currently 15, thousand members here, Less than 2000 have read the rules pertaining to the for sale sub fora. so about 13 percent of the people hear read that thread.

I very much appreciate the work that the Admins do to keep this forum non-commercial and member-friendly. This is a very special place, and it is largely free of the flame wars and similar annoyances of most of the other machining websites. Someone who isn't a participating member, and posts 8 for sale ads is like a telemarketer or door to door solicitor, and in my opinion, just as welcome. They are just looking for free advertising at the expense of the forum owner.

I have now read and understand the for sale stickie. Interesting that only 13% have read these rules. Perhaps this issue can be addressed to forewarn prospective vendors. Given the % of people reading the rules, it doesn't surprise me that a simple rule was broken and will most likely reoccur.

The whole reason I posted that sticky was to inform perspective users of the subfora. IMHO it would be over the top to inform all new members of the rules . And that would only work if all new members posted an introduction. And it would miss the few thousand that have been here but not read the rule.
There is a similar issue. The general rules for the forum have been read about 4,500 times so 30% of the people here have read them.
in contrast the getting started in model engineering thread shows being viewed 30 thousand times so in theory everyone registered could have read that one twice. It is my feeling that 99% of the people here behave and either read the rules or are willing to accept gentle guidance. Most can figure out what is proper behavior here. I do my best to make the rules clear . I can only hope folks take time to read them . I even posted links to rules in the rules thread. I have a life I can not hold the hand of every new member . But I am open to suggestions respectfully submitted preferably via private message. .

this gentle reminder in bold blue type is now in the getting started in model engineering thread.


Please browse and read all sticky threads they will give you a good idea of what we are about. Please read the rules they are simple and easy .

IMO the staff response in this case was reasonable, though I would want the moderators to use their delete post/user rights very restrictive.

For sure there are people around who try to make a commercial profit by selling in this forum.
But someone selling a lot of items at one time isn't necessarilly a dealer. There are a lot of reasons to do that:
clearing out a workshop for space or cash reasons
closing a homeshop for health, age or space reasons
maybe a widow selling the shop of passed away husband

These situations may look a bit like commerce, but they also offer an opportunity especially for beginners to get a bunch of equipment for a reasonable price and in less time than buying each item separately.

Me personally, I haven't seen the posts in question, so I trust You that they looked like from a professional seller

Bastlite : The main thing here is participation and communication.
We can not know what is going on with a person unless they communicate via post on the forum it is that simple.
And as far as the shy or uncomfortable line IMHO if someone is comfortable enough to post a for sale thread they can post a little and participate.
Also folks even though I was the one to write most of the rules here it was not a single handed effort. All the rules were discussed and approved by the staff before they were posted. All the rules were discussed buy the staff some with long deliberation.

I'm a little confused here. WTF happened to the general tone of this forum? What's with all the backbiting and snide comments / admin domineering?

Here's my take... I haven't posted anything in at least a year, but I'm positive I've looked at, reviewed and followed along with at the least 20+ builds in that time as well as EVERY POM. and I'm POSITIVE (Absolutely Positive) I've seen about 10,000 advertisements in that time.

But from the comments Ive seen, if I decide I'm gonna upgrade my machine tools, I shouldnt offer them up here to beginners,etc. because I havent been posting on a daily basis?

As for E-bay / etc, your are correct this isnt ebay, BUT IT IS FREE ADVERTISING on the forum owners nickle. THIS IS the "BUY/SELL/TRADE/EBAY" section of the forum, or did I read the title wrong??????? I figure since I get to look at his advertisement, he can do a little for me.

Anyway, I'm still trying to figure out what's wrong with someone who is a registered member posting things for sale, regardless of the number of posts, in the correcto forum, for other members possbile benefit?

Oh and BTW, I did post my very first build here.. not some other forum.

I spent some time looking at other interest-oriented discussion boards I frequent in home shop machining and other interests (woodworking, Whaler boats, John Deer garden tractors, classic Cadillacs, classic Triumph cars, etc.). About half have no classified section, and on many no advertising or posting of ebay auctions is allowed. Those that have classified sections all have rules, some more restrictive, some less restrictive than what we have here. All restrict use of the classified section to registered users, several ask that only active members list items for sale. Most ban posting of ebay auctions until after the ebay auction ends. One of the rules I really like is requiring for sale ads to list a price, so that it doesn't turn into an auction with members bidding against eachother, which causes hard feelings and flame wars. The rules here may be a little less clearly defined than most other sites, but it's a great site, and a lot more civil and friendly than most. The owner is paying a lot of money and spending a lot of time to host the site for our benefit, and the owner should be able to set the rules. Yeah, there are some commercial ads on the site (which most ignore) but more often than not, on interest oriented sites, they don't cover the costs. There are ads on television too, but that doesn't give viewers the right to dictate what the station broadcasts.
