anyone no of a source in the US that can get small quanity for a descent price?

Chris,

The link that Tin gave you is great. If all you need is a small piece, I would suggest clisking on the "Odds & Ends" link. They have a large variety of cutoffs to choose from in some large sizes for about $3-$3.75 a lb depending on the piece.

You don't say where in the states you are located. I my area PNW Pacific Metal Co in Tualatin Oregon sells drops at $1.50/ pound if you buy 20 pounds or more. They have lots of blocks.

What size are you looking for.

sorry...guess be helpful. Im in kansas City Mo. Iv gone to several metal shops but they said they dont carry that type stuff. more or less sheets flat bar rounds etc....but not alumnium block type stuff...

Find a CNC machine shop in your area. They may have a drop that will work. Again what size do you need.

Onlinemetals.com
Speedymetals.com

I've used them both. Decent prices, fast shipping.

Chris,

The Hobbymetals link is a guy who is only about 15 miles away from me. Stopped in there last weekend and picked up some stuff. Nice guy who caters just to the hobbiest and wants to keep things very affordable. He says they will be updating their website soon to offer other metal products as well. They have lots of odds and ends that are really inexpensive and ship via USPS so the shipping is based on size of the package rather than weight.

There is a place in Wichita Ks called The Yard. They get a lot of stuff from the aircraft factories and I mean a lot. They have an outside yard with at least a hundred tons of aluminum. All different shapes from thin sheet to 12" rounds, stuctural shapes, i beam, pipe, angle you name it. I bought material for a 9 cyl radial there and it came to $175 and I got enough to do twice the parts in case of mistakes. I believe they do mail order and I know they have a website. Just try putting " The Yard" in a search and Iam sure it will come up. Stuctural was $3.00 a pound and sheets was I believe $3.50. Give them a call and I am sure they will have what you need. steve

I don't see Material or anything like that on yardstore.com. :(

O K new info. you cant order online but you can call and they will ship to you.Number is 316 265 4672. ask for the yard office and supposedly they will locate, cut , and ship the shape of your choice. I have never done it this way but have been there in person numerous times and was very satisfied with selection, service and price. steve

OK new new info. website is aluminumyard.com and toll free number is 877 265 4672. steve

There is also McMaster-Carr www.mcmaster.com . They are an industrial supplier, and one is tempted to say, if they don't have it, you don't need it. Not always true, of course, but sometimes it seems that way.
They do have a pretty good selection of various metals and fast reasonably-priced shipping. Other places may be cheaper, but the convenience of McMaster-Carr is hard to beat. They don't ship outside the US, which peeves our Canadian members no end.

All kinds of metals. Prices not bad.
Sorry, compared with steel prices in Germany I don't think they are cheap.

Example:
end steel 1018: 7/8x7/8x8 3/4 $3,59

If I go to Wilms Metall Cologne, Germany, they will cut me the piece I want to length
St37-2K Ø22x222mm 2,97€ iincluding the cut to length

If I buy 1m at Wilms, they charge 3.08€/kg
Speedymetals charges for 0,68kg end piece $2.97 -> $4.36/kg

There's no advantage in buying those ends, I don't see it because You usually have some loss buying ends that usually aren't the dimension You need.

Mike

If your not in Gremany overseas shipping will be high.

Thats right - but I doubt if steel prices in US are much higher than in Germany. Am I wrong?

Remember, these are ends. Not the length You need.

Also ends are scrap. Metalshops sell them to scrap yards for scrap price.

Except ***************s like us there is no commercial company buying ends for their production. And I bet this guy bought his ends from large shops, offering 10 percent more than steel scrap price. Then he adds 200-250% more and sells these ends via internet.

IMO its important that people compare prices; and not telling themselves this looks pretty cheap. Steel and other metal prices are in Germany very negotioable and subject to LARGE discounts for large customers. Believe it or not, large companies with large volumes of steel still buy basic qualities for ~1€/kg + VAT.
And I guess the situation in the states is similar.
