A use for old garage door counterbalance pulleys

I got a new garage door installed a while ago, with new tracks and hardware. Among the salvage from the old door was four pulleys that had been used for the steel cable counterbalance setup. I turned them into a pair of two-sheave blocks to rig a 4:1 block and tackle. As you can see from the...

    Edgar T. Westbury's "Unicorn"

I've scattered various photos of my "Unicorn" build around the forum as I've answered questions, but I don't think I've ever set up a note dedicated to it. I'll try to collect the other photos here so they are all in one place. For now, just to prove I'm actually working on it although progress...

Relocating a LAN's wireless access point

Imagine two buildings, one behind the other. The DSL connection and the wireless router that provides the network's WAP are in building 2 in an office on the far side away from building 1. The wireless signal therefore has to pass completely through building 2 and across the intervening space to...

    Making an 11/64" socket wrench

I recently bought some scale 4-40 nuts from American Model Engineering Supply. Only after I started to install them did I realize that NOBODY, except A.M.E.S., sells an 11/64 socket wrench. Theirs is quite reasonably priced, 3 or 4 dollars, but where is the glory in buying it. I decided to make...

    Finally! The truth from Microsoft

A friend sent me this error message from MS Visual Studio 2010:

Use rotating base of vise to tram mill

I just found another use for the rotating base on my mill vise. Without the vise, the circular rim of the base makes a good surface to run the indicator around when tramming the mill head.

What's the spec for the bevel on nuts?

As evidence that I am becoming WAY too compulsive..... I just made some scale 6-40 nuts in the proportions of "heavy hex" nuts. The thickness and across flats dimensions were easy to figure out from Machinery's Handbook specs. The detail I couldn't find in several reference books or on the web...

I'm glad this forum isn't arrogant or snobbish

I was just reading another machinist forum. There were a couple of topics that were closed, because the poster asked about something that vaguely related to [shudder!] Asian-made machinery. I'm glad this forum is inclusive and willing to help anybody.

Appropriate use of studs vs. bolts

To be "authentic," is there an accepted guideline for when to use studs and nuts vs. bolts on an engine? My current working hypothesis is that studs and nuts are used for blind holes, while bolts are used for through holes. Does that seem plausible?

Turning a crankshaft with temporary added-on centers

Has there been any past discussion on turning a crankshaft that requires temporarily attaching auxiliary centers? I did a search and didn't find anything, but I could easily have missed it. I'm working on Westbury's "Unicorn" and a cast crankshaft comes as part of the kit...with no supplied...

    Drilling steam cylinder passages

Someplace, a while ago, I saw a description of a bang-on, never-fail method of aligning a cylinder for drilling the steam passages. Does that ring a bell with anybody? I've searched this forum, and also the HSM forum, but not found it...either because of faulty searching or because I saw it...
