    Plan to build....steam!!

I would not consider a steel boiler for model operation because of corrosion. Most of the model boiler designs I have seen are copper. Copper is much more corrosion resistant, and much easier to work with. Most places do not require a certified boiler for small hobby boilers.

    Dovetail messed up

Your rod that you were using for measurements was to big in diameter. you were not measuring the dovetail, you were measuring the corner. And depending on chamfer or how sharp the corner is it will give you different results.

What Determines the rpm of a engine?

An important factor to consider is the acceleration of the piston as it moves up and down in the cylinder. A longer stroke has higher acceleration as compared to a shorter stroke engine at any given RPM. So you have to consider the forces getting the piston/rod moving and stopping at each end of...

How big is first order part of reaction torque?

Some engines had 2 balance shafts to neutralize the off center vibration induced by 1 balance shaft. And then you have to look at any of the harmonics that exist in the mass of the engine block. You are trying to balance the crank, rod, piston and block mass, and any harmonics that exist in that...

    Welder

With stick welding the rod and the machine are both important. 6013 was called farm rod when I was growing up, the flux helps direct the arc and that also makes it tend to blow thru. If you can get a DC welder then that opens up some more options - For that I prefer 7018 and reverse polarity...

Stuart S50 - Replacing mild steel shafts with stainless steel shafts.

If stain;less is in contact with steel and water it will corrode. Electrolytic action.

Flat Plane vs Cross Plane Crankshafts, and Firing Order Considerations

If I remember right... The old Triumph and BSA twins had different cranks. Triumph had the crank pins aligned, abd thee BSA had them at 180 degrees. The triumphs had more vibration at certain speeds. My Honda 360 had them at 180 degrees and I had to set the points at 5000 RPM to get it to run...

    Printer problem

If changing the Accel corrects the problem them might want to look into adjusting the current limit on that axis driver (a small potentiometer on the board) or updating the firmware in your machine. It is not difficult, involves setting up the correct software for your machine - Arduino or...

    How do!

If you read the post that started this thread he said that he was thinking about making a diesel-electric unit, and maybe later working on a diesel-hydraulic unit.

    First and Third Projection Symbols

First angle is used by the British and Europeans, while the Americans and Canadians do it correctly and use 3rd angle. Making parts for windmill towers is fun, they come from Spain and Germany and the first thing I have to do with any drawing is convert to 3rd angle to eliminate the confusion...

    How do!

Advantage of electric is that it is clean. The disadvantage of hydraulic is that it tends to leak and thus leave a mess and collect dirt. It is also has less efficient than electric. Size of an engine and generator is comparable to engine, hydraulic pump and oil tank. A 240V generator and a VFD...

    2024 Florida Flywheelers Show

That part sticking up out of the cylinder is a condenser or radiator. The moisture (don't quite think it is steam) rises up through that, cools down, condenses and falls back into the water jacket around the cylinder. Could even have the water level part way up in that radiator and increase the...

    Demoiselle boxer twin

You might consider making your engine a 2-stroke. It would look good, and with each cylinder firing each cycle it would produce more power for the same size, and fewer parts.

    Hand cramping and arthritis

You all might want to look into something that was causing a problem for a close friend. Eat certain foods and his gut would just ache. Traced it down on his own to sulfur. Sulfur dioxide is the bleaching agent in flour and white sugar. Is also present in garlic and other foods. He has to be...

I need some guidance on building a steam powered pump for central heating.

Your hot water heat does not need any pressure, and in fact if it does build pressure it will be very hazardous. I had a low pressure hot water heat system with an outside boiler when I lived in Indiana. My backup for power outages was to make provision to switch my furnace circulation and...

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2024 !

Feliz Navidad y Prospero Ano Nuevo. Luke 2, NIV 8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them...

Mini Lathe Issues and Concept Execution

1 turn in 40 inches is not doable on a 7x10 mini-lathe. It is not doable on any lathe. It is something that would be done with a milling machine and an indexing head driven by the long axis lead screw, or with a CNC with a 4th axis. As far as the other behavior of your machine - leaving the...

    Sleeve questions

Are you going to try and run it on steam, or air? if air, then just use aluminum and don't worry about sleeving it. It will work just fine with a sliding fit and an occasional drop of light oil. those engines can run without rings, or a light running fit with an o-ring. Nignition, low pressures...
