    A different engine configuration

Cool. I'll look for it. Thanks.

    A different engine configuration

The British TS3 Commer diesel (commer knocker) was a unique bellcrank engine that survived for a while.

    Remotor or Rotary Phase Converter

Not at all, in fact you are better off oversizing a bit. I got two 3hp Hitachi VFD's for my lathe and mill. I have never seen a VFD where you can't set the motor ratings, but I guess they can exist. It's possible, you just add up the motor ratings or size the VFD for the largest motor But is...

    Remotor or Rotary Phase Converter

Unless you already have a 2hp single phase motor that would fit I would recommend a single to 3 phase VFD. It will cost less and would be perfect for that application. A few things to consider. A VFD will allow the motor to make full power. A single phase motor of the same rated power will not...

Lathe accident, Tool organizer, bad idea.

I can't imagine an emergency stomp switch would be very useful and I'm surprised no one has commented on it yet. Better than nothing I suppose but I would be more likely looking for the motor switch. Reason being your not use to using it and thinking about using it in a dire situation is...

    Burner for PMR boiler

I built a burner for my BLR-1. I started with a Coleman camp burner that uses a propane/butane tank. I used a e-bay purchased remote tank kit so the burner didn't have to be mounted to the tank. I built a custom base to mount the burner low profile. I made a new burner from stainless (pic shows...

    Steam feed water pump

Hi Florian, Nice pump. Now that I see the link I remember seeing it here from a search but didn't realize the youtube was the same. It wasn't me asking the size. Certainly looks like it works well. I like how you brazed the valve chest to the cylinder. My father decided to design his own taking...

    Steam feed water pump

Thanks for the compliments Jim. The hull is a 36" Dumas "Shelly Foss" Wood tug boat hull originally designed as a twin screw electric now converted to single screw with the PM Research twin oscillator engine. My father built the boat and designed the mechanicals. I just built the boiler, burner...

Time to Vote for the September Project of the Month

I haven't been around here for long but just my thoughts. I like the project of the month and click on the link at the top of the page to check it out. But I'm thinking if the "Project of the month" isn't working out too well, sometimes it's because there are too many good nominees for a...

    Steam feed water pump

Thanks Dan, I ordered the book. I browsed akrailways website previously and didn't see the book but it is a rather confusing website. Paul

    Steam feed water pump

Thanks for the links Jason. Although the Southwest little duplex looks about right I was looking for something simpler and cheaper. Also looking to get something built in the next few weeks. It did send me on an R/D quest and I started to sketch up my own. gbritnell, I looked at Live Steam...

    Steam feed water pump

Now that my fathers steamboat has made it's maiden voyage and runs well on the water the limiting factor is needing to bring it back in every 5 minutes to hand pump in more feed water. In the youtube links below is the type of feed water pump I'm looking to build. Does anybody have any links...

    Valve material

Soon I will be making a few 3/4" poppet valves for a hit-n-miss. The head is cast iron. I have 4140 and 420 stainless to choose from. I would prefer to use the 420 for anti corrosive but would the 4140 be a better choice for wear characteristics.

    Crankshaft pulley

Thanks for the feedback. I decided to turn a crown even though it's not correct. It's a little more visually appealing and if I ever throw a belt on it there will be less chance of it wandering off the pulley.

    Aluminium grain?

Can only imagine extruded aluminum swim trunks would be pretty uncomfortable. Here's a video of extruded scuba tanks. XXhttp://www.liveleak.com/view?i=e04_1274556654 EDIT. Can't seem to post or link url to Liveleak on this board. So remove the XX from the link.

    Crankshaft pulley

I am starting the turning on the crankshaft pulley for a hit-n-miss engine. Plans call for a straight turn on the OD of the pulley. Shouldn't it be a crown for the belt to self center. I was thinking the pulley may have been originally considered decorative but should there be a crown on it if I...

    5040 Tap and die??????????

Even though I have a 5-40 tap and die, along with a bunch of other goofy micro fractional size taps and dies from an ancient Greenlee set I don't bother with using them. When the plans call for a 5-32 I'll determine if a 4-40 or 6-32 is more appropriate.

Trueing up a cast iron flywheel

As Deanofid said, it's probably hard through. Seems you verified that by trying to grind off the initial hard layer. I try not to let things beat me but in this case might be better to start over. But if you do decide to try again my two suggestions would be grinding. You could try single point...

    Turning a one piece crankshaft

Not sure if this will work. http://s207.photobucket.com/home/Paul_C_XJ/index I left the ends with the centers until finish machining. The journals were 5/8 and with the thickness of the webs I didn't need a filler in the connecting rod fillet. I did the rough machining of the connecting rod...

    [Insert Profanity Here]

Never had an endmill pull out of a collet but I have had the quill lock on a Bridgeport slip on more than one occasion. Yeah, kind of ruins the part, endmill and your day. Now I take the time to adjust the quill stop nut.
